How to Setup GNS3 VM on macOS High Sierra
When you run a Cisco Router/Switch on GNS3, your computer’s performance severely degrade. Therefore, you may experience performance issues when you design more advanced network topologies.
The main purpose of using the GNS3 VM is to minimize performance issues. If you want to add Router IOS image to GNS3 program, this Router IOS image will be uploaded to Server and run from it. As a result, you will be able to create more specific network designs and achieve greater performance improvements.
For installation, you must have one of the VMware Workstation, Oracle VM VirtualBox, or VMware Fusion virtualization programs installed on your computer. You can easily import the GNS3 VM.ova file from the GNS3 website and import it with a virtualization program.
The VMware Fusion virtualization is a program used on Mac. If you haven’t already installed it on your Mac, you can check out our article on How to Install VMware Fusion.
In this article, we will install the GNS3 VM on Mac OS High Sierra and finally test it by adding a Cisco Router on the server.

How to Configure GNS3 VM
To install the GNS3 VM using VMware Fusion on the Mac OS High Sierra operating system, follow the steps below.
Step 1
To download the GNS3 VM for Mac, go to the GNS3 website and click the Download button under VMware Workstation.
Step 2
After downloading the GNS3 VM.ova file to your computer, double-click it. After opening the file, the VMware Fusion program installed on the computer will automatically open.
Click Continue to import the OVA file.
Step 3
Importing GNS3 Server…

After importing with VMware Fusion, click Finish to close the window.
Step 5
Starting the GNS3 VM…
Step 6
Ping the GNS3 VM IP address to test the network connection.
Step 7
Open the GNS3 program and in the Preferences window, select “Enable the GNS3 VM” in the GNS3 VM section and click the OK button.
Step 8
Click Setup Wizard from the Help menu to add the Cisco Router to the GNS3 Server.
Step 9
In the Setup Wizard window, click the Run modern IOS option.
Step 10
In the step to select the GNS3 VM virtual machine program, click VMware (Recommended) and click Next.
Step 11
In the New Appliance Template window, select Add an iOS router using a real IOS image (supported by Dynamips) and click OK.

Select Cisco Router c7200 IOS image and click Open.

After you have added the Cisco Router, you can see that the IOS image uploaded to the GNS3 VM in the IOS Router Templates window.

Drag and drop the Router into the GNS3 workspace and test it by running the Router.
